Can Spinal Stenosis Result from a Traffic Collision?

Can Spinal Stenosis Result from a Traffic Collision?

In Miami, car accidents can cause a range of injuries. Some of these injuries are minor and involve a brief recovery time, while others can be more extensive and come with complications that impact your life for the long term.

One of these potential complications is spinal stenosis, which occurs when an injury, misalignment, or congenital condition narrows the spinal canal. As a result, the spine compresses the spinal cord and the nerve roots branching from it.

Take a closer look at what this condition involves and how it’s connected to car crash trauma.

What Are Common Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis?

This condition causes symptoms in the areas innervated by the compressed nerve. For example, you might experience symptoms in your shoulders, arms, wrists, or hands if you suffer from spinal stenosis in your neck. Your symptoms could appear in your hips, legs, and feet if you have spinal stenosis in your back.

Depending on the nature and location of the injury, your symptoms may include:

  • Pain
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Weakness
  • Loss of coordination and dexterity

Compression can irritate nerve tissues, leading to inflammation. Inflamed nerves may register pain. They may be unable to carry sensory signals to the brain or motor signals to the body. Compressed nerves may also misfire, sending erroneous impulses in both directions.

The nerve damage from spinal stenosis may be long-term. The physical impingement on the nerves typically doesn’t heal on its own, and you might experience these symptoms continuously. In other cases, the inflammation may improve on some days and worsen on others, causing recurring symptoms.

How Does Spinal Stenosis Occur in a Car Accident?

Spinal stenosis can result from normal wear and tear. For example, arthritis and disc degeneration can narrow the spinal canal.

However, trauma is also a common cause of spinal stenosis. Several common car accident injuries in Miami can result in spinal stenosis, including:

Herniated Disc

Stress on your spine can compress and deform the discs between the vertebrae. The deformed disc can bulge into the spinal canal, pressing on spinal nerves and nerve roots.

Whiplash is a common cause of herniated discs. This injury happens when your head pulls on your neck during a traffic collision. As your head whips back and forth, a disc can be compressed and hyperextended, weakening its structure.

Fractured Vertebra

Bone fragments from a fractured vertebra can narrow the spinal canal. Even if these fragments don’t sever the nerves, they can compress them.

However, a broken vertebra can also cause spinal stenosis when there are no bone fragments in the spinal canal. A fractured vertebra can develop bone spurs that overgrow the vertebrae during healing, and this growth can narrow the spinal canal.

Dislocated Vertebra

Strain on the back can damage the ligaments that hold the vertebrae in place. If a vertebra shifts out of alignment, the space for the spinal cord can narrow.

Ligament damage can also cause the soft tissues to swell. A swollen ligament can push into the spinal canal, compressing the spinal nerves and nerve roots.

Treating spinal stenosis typically starts with reducing inflammation, before surgery may become an option. Orally or injected anti-inflammatory medications can reduce inflammation and relieve symptoms of spinal stenosis.

If medication is ineffective, doctors may operate to remove part of the spine or fuse the vertebrae.
